OUR STORY & STRATEGY

Redistricting is a crucial part of the fight to protect democracy, and it is no longer just a once-in-a-decade fight.

With Republicans now willing to gerrymander maps whenever and wherever they have power, we are in a constant struggle to protect the gains we have made in our fight for a representative democracy. 

We have a proven and battle-tested strategy and team that is committed to fight the ongoing attempts to gerrymander, and remain ready for the redistricting fights ahead. But we can’t do it alone. We need the dedicated  support and commitment of others who also want to protect and strengthen our democracy.

Our 10 Year Plan

There’s no longer an “off season” in redistricting. Redistricting is a crucial part of the fight to protect democracy, and it is ongoing. If we do not stay diligent, we will lose the progress towards fairness for which we have fought so hard.

We support candidates for offices that matter for redistricting through  strategic political and electoral engagement throughout the decade.

Fighting For A More Representative Democracy

In 2017, Attorney General Eric Holder, with support from party leaders like President Barack Obama and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, established the NDRC as a centralized hub to fight for fair maps and protect the redistricting process from power-hungry politicians.

Since then, we have fought on every front,  working with organizers, voters, and leaders to build a movement for a more representative democracy. And because of that work, the 2022 and 2024 congressional elections were held on the fairest national congressional map in a generation. 

But our work is far from finished. Gerrymandering is no longer a once-a-decade threat. It is now a constant battle as Republicans push to redraw maps mid-decade, weaken independent courts, and empower election deniers. We are meeting this moment with a proven strategy, urgency, and resolve — because our democracy depends on it.

The path forward may not be easy, but our mission to build a representative democracy is clear. Fair maps are not just about elections. They are about power, accountability, and the future of our country.

Democracy Defenders

The NDRC’s Democracy Defenders program focuses on races that are critical to preserving the integrity of our elections. These candidates are committed to strengthening  the institutions and offices that safeguard fair processes, ensuring that voters, not politicians, hold the power.

In 2024, more than 115 Democracy Defenders won their races, helping Democrats build power in key legislative chambers and secure critical statewide offices. This program remains a cornerstone of our strategy to protect and expand representative democracy nationwide.
