NDRC: Disastrous SCOTUS Ruling Guts the Voting Rights Act to Rubber Stamp Republican Gerrymanders
Washington, D.C. — Today, John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais:
“This disastrous decision is an affront to the heroes of the Civil Rights Movement who shed blood to ensure that Americans would have equal access to the ballot box, and will only embolden those who seek to return to an era of rampant voter discrimination and disenfranchisement. For more than a decade, the Roberts Court has increasingly enabled the Republican Party to escalate its attack on the right to vote through extreme gerrymandering and other discriminatory practices. Although the Roberts Court has effectively gutted the Voting Rights Act, the fact of the matter is that discrimination is still very much illegal in this country, and this decision does not green light the intentional dismantling of existing districts.
“We know that Republicans are eager to use this decision to further their erosion of minority voting power. Our long-term goal remains ending the practice of partisan and racial gerrymandering through federal legislation. Until that day comes, we are prepared to continue using every tool that is still available to protect Americans’ hard-won voting rights.”
