ICYMI: AG Eric Holder, Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Rep. Terri Sewell Rally Grassroots Supporters for Fight Ahead Following Disastrous SCOTUS Decision to Gut the Voting Rights Act
Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, on a virtual organizing call, Attorney General Eric Holder, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Representative Terri Sewell (AL-7) rallied grassroots supporters to take action in the fight ahead to protect democracy following the U.S. Supreme Court’s disastrous decision in Louisiana v. Callais. The full event can be viewed here.
During the event, Attorney General Holder warned of the elevated threat of Republican gerrymandering following the Court’s decision to gut the Voting Rights Act and urged attendees to join the fight to end partisan gerrymandering.
Below are excerpts from Attorney General Holder’s remarks. The full event can be viewed here:
“Under Roberts, this Court has repeatedly made it easier for billionaires and corporations to spend massive amounts of money on elections, while adding obstacles for American citizens — particularly people of color — to vote.”
…
“That’s how you entrench minority rule: you restrict the vote, you draw unfair maps, and then you remove the legal pathways to fight back. If nothing changes, we’re looking at a future where election outcomes are increasingly predetermined by politicians and not by voters.
“Republicans know exactly what they’re doing. They are afraid of the very people they are supposed to represent. They know that their agenda — the big, beautiful bill, the chaos, the corruption, the war — cannot survive a fair fight. So their answer is to rig the rules and to silence voters rather than compete for their support.
“But this cannot be the final word. And this certainly isn’t the end. Although the Roberts Court has tried its best to make the VRA a dead letter, racial discrimination remains unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. The need for new, durable voting rights legislation and reforms to our judicial system is greater now than at any point in recent memory. The rights won through generations of struggle must be protected.”
