NDRC Memo: Midterm Election Results Show Democrats Destroyed Trump’s Gerrymandering Scheme
Washington, D.C. – Today, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) issued a memo from the organization’s President, John Bisognano, outlining how the 2026 midterm results show that, at the direction of Attorney General Eric Holder, Democrats’ multi-pronged strategy to fight back against Republicans’ gerrymandering scheme succeeded.
In red states, where Republicans enacted egregious mid-decade gerrymanders against the will of their own constituents, voters turned out in historic numbers against Republican candidates. Meanwhile, in Democratic response states where citizens overwhelmingly approved a new map at the ballot box or succeeded in court, voters turned out in support of Democratic candidates. Those contrasting dynamics left Republicans with a net loss of seats from their mid-decade redistricting scheme.
“When Republicans launched the national gerrymandering crisis, they assumed Democrats would not fight back and that they could insulate themselves from accountability at the ballot box—the election results show just how mistaken those assumptions were,” said John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC). “Between enacting egregious gerrymanders against the will of their own constituents and facing a well-organized, well-executed Democratic response, Republicans’ haphazard gerrymandering scheme poked the bear in the eye—and they got mauled at the ballot box.”
