Eric Holder Statement on North Carolina Supreme Court Election Results

November 21, 2024

Washington, D.C. — Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), released the following statement in response to the North Carolina Supreme Court election results:

“North Carolinians have sent a needed message: they are tired of ideologically driven judicial decisions that are inconsistent with the will of the people and want justices who will evaluate the cases before them in a fair manner that protects their rights and the rule of law.

“I not only want to congratulate Justice Riggs, but also North Carolinians, who have shown that when the people engage in the electoral process, they have the capacity to overcome even the most powerful special interests and can protect democracy. The fight to achieve real democracy in North Carolina is not finished, but this result shows that, with consistent focus and participation at the ballot box, positive change is possible.”

Background on NDRC involvement in the 2024 North Carolina Supreme Court election:

State supreme court races were a top priority this year for Attorney General Holder, who endorsed Justice Allison Riggs for re-election and traveled to the Tar Heel State multiple times to draw attention to the importance of the North Carolina Supreme Court race and to raise money in support of Riggs’ candidacy. In October, Attorney General Holder rallied voters in support of Justice Riggs at a rally with President Obama, during a service at Steele Creek AME Zion Church, and at a Souls to the Polls event in Charlotte. The NDRC also invested money into the North Carolina Supreme Court race as part of its partnership with Planned Parenthood Votes to support state supreme court races across the country. The victory in North Carolina builds on a series of state supreme court wins across the nation for pro-democracy candidates in places like Michigan, Montana, and Kentucky.
