Eric Holder Statement on North Carolina Trial Court Rejecting Republican Attempt to Overturn Election Results

February 7, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), issued the following statement in response to the Wake County Superior Court rejecting legal claims backed by North Carolina Republicans that aim to overturn the results of the 2024 North Carolina Supreme Court election in which Justice Allison Riggs, the Democratic candidate in that race, was re-elected to the bench:

“The state trial court treated these hollow anti-democracy claims just as any court must—by rejecting them. North Carolinians have spoken through their legally cast ballots, the votes have been recounted multiple times, the state Board of Elections has rejected these claims, and now a state court has considered the issue in full and done the same. This arrogant and dangerous attempt to circumvent the will of the people must end—now. It is simply time to accept the results of this fair election.”

Earlier in the week, Attorney General Holder published a guest essay in The New York Times warning of these efforts by North Carolina Republicans. The full essay can be read here
