Eric Holder Statement on Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s Retirement

November 6, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), released the following statement in response to Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi’s announcement that she will not seek re-election:

“Nancy Pelosi is the G.O.A.T. and the most consequential Speaker of the House in American history. She is among the finest patriots and public servants our nation has ever known, and we are all better for her decades of distinguished service. Her legislative accomplishments are monumental—she has singularly improved the lives of millions of Americans and created brighter futures for generations of children to come. She strengthened the social safety net to protect the most vulnerable and stood firm against the dark forces that seek to erode the rule of law and our bedrock democratic principles.

“I will always be inspired by her strength, resolve, and grace as she blazed a historic trail through the House of Representatives, never wavering in her commitment to serve the best interests of every American. It is now incumbent upon all of us who care deeply about this country to carry forward her legacy and show the same tenacity as we confront the challenges ahead.

“On a personal note, I am honored to call Nancy my dear friend. She has offered me wise and honest counsel in both times of triumph and struggle. Without her indefatigable spirit and support, the NDRC would never have gotten off the ground, nor achieved the success it has in advancing a fairer, more just electoral system.

“Madame Speaker, thank you for your lifetime of good work and for your friendship. May your next chapter bring new adventures—and, though it may be against your nature, some well-earned rest with your beloved husband, children, and grandchildren.

“I love Nancy with the smiling face.”
