Washington, D.C. – Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), released the following statement in response to the Texas gubernatorial election results:

“This is a major victory for Texans, who refused to be silenced after Greg Abbott and other Texas Republicans launched Donald Trump’s gerrymandering crisis at their expense, and fought back at the ballot box. They have rejected anti-democracy MAGA politics by electing Gina Hinojosa, a leader who will put the people first and ensure every Texan’s voice is heard. After decades of Republican rule during which too many politicians were complacent, corrupt, or both, Texans are turning a page on an era dominated by anti-democracy, pro-special-interest politicians and forging a new path—one that will protect the rights and fight for the interests of working people in the Lone Star State.

“I congratulate Governor-elect Hinojosa on her historic victory, and I applaud the efforts of the millions of Texans who organized and voted to make it possible. They have demonstrated that when people mobilize together in defense of democracy, their voices cannot be silenced.”
