Washington, D.C. –  Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), released the following statement in response to Judge Chris Taylor’s victory in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, which ensures the court will maintain a fair-minded majority through at least 2030:

“The story of the Wisconsin Supreme Court race is part of the larger narrative: American citizens are now focused and truly determined to fight to protect our democracy. When voters faced a choice between an extreme right-wing candidate who perpetuated the big 2020 election lie and who catered to special interests, and a highly-qualified jurist with a strong record of protecting the rights and freedoms of the people, they chose the latter with resounding force. Today, Wisconsinites have not only elected a brilliant justice to the bench but have also ensured that the pro-democracy majority on their state’s supreme court is protected.

“Congratulations to Judge Taylor on her victory and to the people of Wisconsin for their tireless efforts to guard democracy in the Badger State. But the struggle goes on in other places this year. We—the people—must continue to use our power to ensure that justice and fairness prevail wherever they are under attack.”

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND:

As reported by NBC News, CNN, and The Washington Post, this election was a top priority for Attorney General Holder, who endorsed Judge Chris Taylor earlier this year. Ahead of the general election, he participated in fundraisers and signed emails and texts to raise funds for Judge Taylor’s campaign, ensuring it had the resources it needed.

In April, Attorney General Holder traveled to Wisconsin to help get out the vote and raise awareness of the importance of this race. While there, he participated in a roundtable discussion with Congresswoman Gwen Moore and community leaders in Milwaukee. He also spoke with NBC News’ Shaq Brewster and Milwaukee radio hosts Sherwin Hughes of 101.7 The Truth and Keith Parris of WNOV, and rallied voters and volunteers in Janesville and Kenosha. While Attorney General Holder campaigned on the ground in Wisconsin, President Barack Obama encouraged voters to turn out for Judge Taylor in partnership with NDRC. In addition to Attorney General Holder and President Obama’s engagement, NDRC and its affiliates continuously mobilized their grassroots networks to recruit volunteers and get out the vote.
