ICYMI: Donald Trump’s Gerrymandering Scheme is Backfiring
November 21, 2025
Washington, D.C. – A slew of major news outlets — from the New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, Reuters, Politico, to the HuffPost, and The Hill — are all reporting the same reality: Trump’s gerrymandering push is backfiring across the country. Even the Wall Street Journal editorial board agrees.
“Donald Trump thought he could bully states into illegal mid-decade gerrymanders, but voters and the courts are rejecting his scheme, and members of his own party in the states are thinking twice before following his orders,” said National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) President John Bisognano.
The stories come after a month of pushback against Trump’s gerrymandering scheme. The American people forcefully responded at the ballot box on Election Day — passing Prop 50 by enormous margins and making their desire for pro-democracy leaders clear in Virginia. That momentum continued with two major court rulings in Texas and Utah that blocked Texas Republicans’ double-gerrymander from use in the midterm elections and ensured Utahns have a fair congressional map. On top of that, Republican legislatures in Kansas and Indiana have abandoned special sessions to redraw their maps after it became clear that mid-decade gerrymandering is wrong and unpopular among their constituents, despite direct pressure from the White House.
