Washington, D.C. — Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), published a guest essay in The Baltimore Sun, imploring Maryland Senators to sign a discharge petition to bring the state’s proposed congressional map to the Senate floor for a vote. The full essay can be read here.

Below is an excerpt from Attorney General Holder’s essay:

I understand there may be trepidation among senators to pursue this course of action, but a discharge petition exists precisely for moments such as this — when the normal legislative process is not meeting an urgent challenge. By using a discharge petition to bring the proposed map to a vote, Maryland senators would be using democratic means to help stop the country from sliding into an autocratic system, where the House majority would be guaranteed to a political party beholden to Trump in the elections to come.”
