ICYMI: Eric Holder Joins Katie Couric to Sound the Alarm on the Trump Administration’s Escalating Attacks on Democracy

June 17, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Last week, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), joined Next Question with Katie Couric to warn of the dangers posed to our democracy.

During their conversation, Attorney General Holder and Couric discussed several topics, including the Trump administration’s gutting and weaponization of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and alarming tactics Republicans have employed to consolidate power, including gerrymandering, and NDRC’s work to combat these efforts.

Attorney General Holder said the following to warn of the threat of Republican gerrymandering:

“You know, I worry. Are they trying to find ways in which they perpetuate themselves in power in ways that are inconsistent with our Constitution? Are they trying to make sure that, you know, elections can be conducted in such a way that they can guarantee a result, regardless of what the American people, you know, want to do? One of the things I’ve been fighting is this whole question of racial and partisan gerrymandering. Do they want to somehow use gerrymandering, knowing that they flatten the opposition, and then gerrymander things in such a way so that they can guarantee Republican domination of our state legislatures, Republican domination of the United States House of Representatives, because there are no checks? So that’s at least one of the ways in which I get concerned about what it is they might do.”
