NDRC and The States Project Announce Multi-Million Dollar Investment in State Legislature Races in Battleground States
June 5, 2024
Washington, D.C. — Today, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) and The States Project announced a new multi-million dollar initiative aimed at supporting state legislative candidates in five battleground states. The joint effort will fund multi-million dollar data-driven electoral programs aimed at supporting pro-democracy, Democratic candidates for state legislatures in Arizona, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
The collaboration aims to replicate the success achieved through NDRC and The States Project’s partnership in 2022, when Democrats made historic gains in state legislatures on newly-fair maps, achieving trifecta power in Michigan and Minnesota and gaining the House majority in Pennsylvania. Heading into 2024, Democrats have the ability to compete for legislative majorities in even more states, including Wisconsin, New Hampshire, and Arizona.
“This year’s state legislative elections will determine whether states turn toward democracy or autocracy. The stakes could not be higher for millions of Americans and the choice could not be more clear. Right now, we are seeing gerrymandered Republican legislative majorities pursue anti-democracy agendas: from passing draconian abortion bans to Jim Crow era voter suppression bills. In stark contrast, where in power, Democrats have enacted measures to ensure electoral fairness and protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of the people. Democratic state legislatures have enacted policies that are consistent with the will of the majority,” remarked Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC). “With state legislatures at the forefront of protecting democracy, NDRC and The States Project are teaming up to invest in these races—and win. We are putting our support behind these races because we have a major opportunity to elect pro-democracy, Democratic majorities in each of these legislatures. With the stakes so incredibly high today, and in the consequences for years to come, we must all be involved in the struggle to preserve our democracy.”
“Nothing has more impact than working in state legislatures to achieve the American promise. The States Project is proud to once again partner with NDRC to help build pro-democracy governing majorities that will improve lives in states across the country,” said Daniel Squadron, Founding Partner & Executive Director of The States Project. “This partnership will enable us to work toward our shared goals to win the governing power needed to safeguard our democracy, protect individual rights, and improve lives.”
