NDRC Announces 5th Round of 2024 Democracy Defenders

October 10, 2024

Washington, D.C. — Today, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) announced its fifth round of endorsements as part of its Democracy Defenders program, a campaign to support candidates running for state-level offices that are essential to protecting and strengthening democracy around the country. Earlier this week, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), traveled to Arizona and Wisconsin in support of several NDRC-endorsed state legislative candidates. This round of endorsements supports Democratic candidates running for the following state legislative chambers:

1. Arizona House of Representatives and Arizona State Senate

2. Michigan House of Representatives

3. Minnesota Senate

4. New Hampshire House of Representatives and New Hampshire State Senate

5. Wisconsin State Assembly and Wisconsin State Senate

“The outcome of November’s state legislative elections will determine whether everything from voting rights, to reproductive rights, to worker rights, will be strengthened or weakened, and the contrast between MAGA-Republican-controlled state legislatures and Democratic-controlled state legislatures on our fundamental rights and freedoms could not be more stark,” said Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the NDRC. “In Arizona, Wisconsin, and New Hampshire, MAGA Republicans have enacted egregious gerrymanders, passed voter suppression laws, and kept extreme abortion bans on the books. They have abused their power by forcing unpopular and unjust policies onto the people and by undermining progress towards a more representative democracy. In Michigan and Minnesota, where the maps are fair, Democrats have pursued pragmatic policies that matter most to the American people: making it easier to vote, protecting reproductive rights, enhancing gun safety measures, and strengthening the middle class.

“With more fair state legislative maps in place than before, voters have the opportunity to achieve a long sought vision—to elect legislative majorities that serve the people and not the special interests. I’m proud to support these Democracy Defenders. The choice could not be more clear. The stakes could not be more consequential. The people must make their voices heard and elect these Democracy Defenders this November,” Holder concluded.
