Washington, D.C. — Today, John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), released the following statement backing California’s new congressional map proposal, which was drawn to counteract the Texas gerrymander:

“Donald Trump can and should call off his gerrymandering scheme and put an end to the crisis he created. If he continues to move forward, California has a measured response to counteract his blatant power grab in Texas. California is pursuing a new map that retains the general structure of the independent commission-drawn map enacted in 2021, and unlike the proposed Texas gerrymander, protects the rights of communities of color and keeps communities of interest together. Not only does this map continue to reflect the will of Californians, but it is also a responsible and responsive approach to the existential threat to democracy that Donald Trump’s actions pose.”
