NDRC Calls on Congress to Reject Extreme Voter Suppression Bill
April 10, 2025
Washington, D.C. — Today, John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), released the following statement in response to the U.S. House of Representatives taking up the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would require Americans to provide proof of citizenship to register to vote or when updating their registration and require states to conduct frequent purges of their voter rolls:
“A more accurate name for the ‘SAVE Act’ would be the PURGE Act, because that is exactly what this bill would do. Instead of saving anything, House Republicans are pushing anti-democracy legislation that would purge American voters off the registration rolls and then make it needlessly challenging for millions of Americans to re-register to vote again. Every single American voter—in red and blue states—should be alarmed by this attempt to enact extreme voter suppression, and Congress must reject it.”
