Today, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) provided an additional $200,000 to the Democratic Party of Virginia Coordinated Campaign to elect Ralph Northam and Democrats down the ballot. NDRC, including its affiliated entities, has now made a total investment in the Virginia race of $1.2 million.

Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chair of NDRC, released the following statement:

“With just one week left before Election Day, this investment will help Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam and Democrats counter the flood of right-wing money that is supporting Ed Gillespie’s inflammatory and false attack ads.

“Virginians deserve a political system where voters choose their representatives, not where politicians choose their voters. Ralph Northam is the clear choice to ensure that when Virginia redraws their maps in 2021, the districts will reflect the values and diversity of the Commonwealth’s communities.”

In addition to NDRC’s investment, Holder campaigned in Norfolk and Richmond, VA this past weekend to assist with Democratic turnout efforts. Last week, NDRC and ACRONYM launched a digital program that will inspire minorities and young people to vote in Virginia on November 7th. You can view the ad here: http://www.showuptovote.com

NDRC has also joined with MobilizeAmerica to create an online portal that channels grassroots volunteers into canvassing, phone banking, and text banking for Democrats in Virginia.

Virginia’s maps were badly gerrymandered by Republicans following the Census in 2010. Last year in Virginia, Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump by 5 points, but Republicans still control 7 of Virginia’s 11 congressional seats. The next governor of Virginia will have the power to sign or veto Congressional and state legislative maps following the 2020 Census.
