NDRC Responds to Report that Trump White House is Directing Texas Lawmakers to Gerrymander Ahead of 2026 Midterms

June 10, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Today, John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), issued the following statement in response to a report by The New York Times indicating that the Trump White House is pressuring Texas lawmakers to draw a congressional map that is even more gerrymandered than it is currently:

“This is yet another example of Trump trying to suppress votes in order to hold onto power. First, the Trump Department of Justice abandoned the current legal challenge against Texas’s congressional map for violating the Voting Rights Act and then gutted the agency’s Civil Rights Division. Now, by directing Texas lawmakers to further gerrymander their manipulated congressional map, the Trump Administration is aiming to roll back the fairest national congressional map in a generation ahead of the 2026 midterms. This corrupt behavior must be stopped.

“Texas’s congressional map is already being sued for violating the Voting Rights Act because it diminishes the voting power of the state’s fast-growing Latino population. To draw an even more extreme gerrymander would only assure that the barrage of legal challenges against Texas will continue.”
