NDRC Statement on Florida Draft House and Congressional Maps

November 29, 2021

Today, Kelly Burton, National Democratic Redistricting Committee President, released the following statement in response to the draft state house and congressional maps released by the Florida House Redistricting Committee:

“Earlier this month, the Florida Senate Committee on Reapportionment released draft maps that appeared to be a good starting point, accommodating the state’s population shifts without turning existing representation upside down. Today, House Republicans are using new draft maps to show exactly how badly they can gerrymander the state. These maps do not reflect the population of Florida according to the latest census data, are not responsive to Florida’s voters, and were clearly drawn to completely tip the political balance in favor of Republicans. Florida’s leaders must listen to their constituents and create new maps building upon the successful implementation of the Fair Districts Amendments.”
