NDRC Statement on South Carolina Senate Rejecting Mid-Decade Gerrymander
Washington, D.C. — Today, John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), issued the following statement in response to the South Carolina Senate’s bipartisan rejection of a proposed mid-decade gerrymander that would make all of the state’s congressional districts majority-white:
“What’s happened in South Carolina demonstrates that state Republicans have a choice: they can either help put a stop to this gerrymandering crisis by standing up for their constituents, or they can follow orders from Washington, DC, at the expense of the people they profess to serve. To their credit, South Carolina Republicans thought twice before following orders from DC, underscoring that the immoral gerrymandering frenzy growing across the South to draw Black voters out of a voice in Congress is further fueling opposition among the people. As legislators in other states face similar pressure to sell out their constituents, they should follow in South Carolina’s footsteps and reject this partisan charade.”
