NDRC Statement on Texas House Passage of Trump’s Gerrymander

August 20, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Today, John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), issued the following statement in response to the Texas House passing Trump’s extreme gerrymander, which packs and cracks Black and Latino communities, reducing the number of districts where they can elect candidates of their choice, despite overwhelming opposition in the Lone Star State:

“Texans across the political spectrum have made it clear: they don’t want this extreme, racially-discriminatory gerrymander. But Texas state House Republicans—who enjoy the insulation from accountability in their own gerrymandered districts—are following the marching orders of just one person: Donald Trump.

“Any Republicans who feign concern about losing seats in California due to a redistricting ballot measure know exactly what they need to do to end this madness. They must demand that Donald Trump call off his gerrymandering scheme in Texas and elsewhere before it’s too late—just as many congressional Republicans called on Trump to tell his supporters to stop attacking the Capitol on January 6. They did it in 2020, which protected the results of a free and fair election, and they can and should do it again in 2025 to help bring our country back from the precipice of a national redraw and protect the fairest national congressional map our country has seen.”
