NDRC Supports Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission’s Statewide Public Input Tour

Robust Public Input Leads to Fair Maps

Today the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (MICRC) kicks off a statewide tour of public hearings to hear input from Michiganders ahead of the congressional and state legislative map drawing process. The MICRC consists of five independents, four Republicans, and four Democrats randomly selected in 2020 from a pool of thousands of applicants. This will be the first time Michigan’s maps are drawn through a commission process after more than 61% of Michiganders supported ballot Amendment 2 in 2018. The non-partisan body  is mandated by Michigans’s constitution to redraw the state’s congressional and state legislature maps based on the data collected every decade by the U.S. Census Bureau.

“The National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) was proud to support the creation of Michigan’s independent redistricting commission because it takes power away from politicians and gives it to the people. After nearly a decade of voting in some of the most gerrymandered maps in the country, Michigan voters overwhelmingly supported the creation of the MICRC to create a fair and transparent process. We are encouraged not only by the Commission’s commitment to receiving input through their state tour but also by the online public comment portal,” said Molly Mitchell, NDRC States Press Secretary.

“We encourage all Michganders to proactively engage in the redistricting process either by attending a hearing or by submitting input via the online portal over the coming weeks. When fair maps are in place in Michigan we know Democrats can compete and win,” continued Mitchell.
