In 2018, Michigan voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment to create a 13-member Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. The new congressional and state legislative districts approved by the Commission are both more competitive and representative of the state than the 2011 maps drawn by Republican state legislators. Michigan is a clear example of how independent commissions can shield the redistricting process from partisan influence and draw maps that reflect the will of voters. Michigan will remain an NDRC target in 2022—we must elect legislators in the newly-competitive state legislative chambers who will protect the commission-led redistricting process, and elect fair-minded justices to the Michigan Supreme Court. We must also re-elect Governor Gretchen Whitmer who was first elected in 2018 as fair maps champion and supported by the NDRC.
For the 2022 elections in Michigan, we are targeting the following: Governor, State Supreme Court, State Senate, and State House

How Our Fight Continues
Thanks to the grassroots movement for fair maps, we have maps in place that are far more fair than they would have been if Republicans had been allowed to gerrymander unchecked this past redistricting cycle. But if the last few years have shown us anything, it’s that our fight to protect free and fair elections is far from over. Redistricting has always been part of the larger fight to protect our democracy. The stakes are far too high to stand by the sidelines.
