Ohio
Following constitutional amendments that were overwhelmingly supported by Ohio voters in both 2015 and 2018, Ohio’s redistricting process provides opportunities for both the state legislature and a bipartisan commission to play a role in redistricting the state.
The 7-member Republican-controlled Ohio Redistricting Commission (ORC), made up of two members from each party, as well as the governor, secretary of state, and state auditor, adopted gerrymandered state legislative maps despite new reforms that included partisan fairness requirements. And despite the Ohio Supreme Court striking down several iterations of gerrymandered state legislative maps, a federal court allowed previously invalidated redistricting plans to be implemented for the 2022 elections.
The Ohio Legislature initially drew and passed the state’s new congressional map, which was eventually struck down by the Ohio Supreme Court as a partisan gerrymander. But the ORC replaced the invalidated map with a similarly gerrymandered one, which, though it will be used for the 2022 primary elections, was also struck down by the Ohio Supreme Court. A new map must be drawn before the 2024 elections.
Elected officials who show a blatant disregard for their state constitution and voters must be held accountable. That’s why this fall, the NDRC is continuing its fight for fair maps in Ohio by targeting the governorship, secretary of state and state auditor seats, and the state legislature, and supporting fair-minded judicial candidates for state supreme court. Ohio voters demanded fair maps and they deserve fair maps—we are on a mission to deliver for Ohio.

How Our Fight Continues
Thanks to the grassroots movement for fair maps, we have maps in place that are far more fair than they would have been if Republicans had been allowed to gerrymander unchecked this past redistricting cycle. But if the last few years have shown us anything, it’s that our fight to protect free and fair elections is far from over. Redistricting has always been part of the larger fight to protect our democracy. The stakes are far too high to stand by the sidelines.
