Eric Holder Condemns Enactment of Republicans’ Texas Gerrymander

August 29, 2025

Washington, D.C. — Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), released the following statement on the enactment of Republicans’ new, more extreme congressional gerrymander in Texas:

“After enacting extraordinarily unpopular policies—such as ripping health care away from millions of Americans and giving tax cuts to the rich—Republicans are terrified of the voters. They do not want a system that is based on the will of the people, where both parties can compete for the House majority; they want a system that insulates them from any accountability at the ballot box and predetermines the outcomes of elections before a ballot is cast. This is what generated the directive from the White House and the obsequious agreement by Texas Republicans.

“The new, even more egregious, gerrymander in Texas reveals that weakness and fear and further diminishes the voting power of communities of color—despite the fact that they make up 60 percent of the statewide population. It is wrong, it is unlawful, and the National Redistricting Foundation has already challenged it in court. We must ensure that justice prevails and democracy survives in Texas.”
