Eric Holder Statement on Michigan Supreme Court Election Results
November 5, 2024
Washington, D.C. — Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), released the following statement in response to the Michigan Supreme Court election results:
“By re-electing Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and electing Kimberly Ann Thomas, Michiganders have shown that consistent engagement with the democratic process can strengthen democracy and deliver results for the people. When Republicans tried to put two ideologically extreme candidates on the Michigan Supreme Court, the voters soundly rejected them and demonstrated that they want to preserve a strong democracy and the rights that come with it.
“I want to not only congratulate Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and Justice-elect Kimberly Ann Thomas, but also Michiganders as a whole for consistently showing up to perform their civic duties and make their voices heard in these races. With Justice Bolden and Justice-elect Thomas, Michigan will have independent and fair-minded state supreme court justices who will protect their most cherished freedoms.”
ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND:
State Supreme Court races were a top priority for Attorney General Holder, who endorsed Justice Kyra Harris Bolden and Kimberly Ann Thomas and traveled to the Wolverine State to draw attention to the importance of Michigan’s State Supreme Court races. In October, Attorney General Holder fired up voters in support of Justice Bolden and Thomas at rallies in Benton Harbor and Ypsilanti, and at a roundtable discussion in Detroit to engage, educate, and empower Black men to participate at the ballot box in the 2024 election. The Attorney General also highlighted the stakes of the state supreme court races in local press interviews, including in interviews with WDMK and with Bankole Thompson of The Detroit News for his column and podcast.
