Eric Holder Statement on the 2nd Anniversary of January 6th Attack
January 6, 2023
Washington, D.C. — Today, Eric Holder, the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chair of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, released the following statement on the second anniversary of the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol:
“The January 6th coup attempt was a disgusting assault on the most fundamental tenet of our democracy: free and fair elections. As we reflect on this dark day in American history, we must remember the bravery and sacrifice of the members of law enforcement who protected our nation and who continue to diligently investigate and hold the perpetrators of this attack to account.
“Although the American people soundly rejected a great many of the anti-democratic candidates across the country at the ballot box this past election, we must recognize that the dangerous undercurrents that fueled the January 6th coup attempt are far from gone. Rather than shunning their anti-democracy faction, too many leaders of the Republican Party have feared it and emboldened it. The ramifications of this choice are unfolding right now where the absurd Speaker selection process is only a preview of the dysfunction to come.
“It is up to us – the American people – to determine the legacy of that dark January day. There are choices to be made. My hope is that the 2022 elections marked the beginning of a strong movement to protect and strengthen our democracy for years to come. Every generation of Americans has been called upon to defend our democracy. Now it is our time. We must not fail. If we courageously work together and strongly oppose all those who have embraced an anti-American vision for our nation, we will surely succeed.”
