GOP Primaries Cement Embrace of Election Denial

August 3, 2022

Washington, D.C. — Today, Kelly Burton, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), issued the following statement in response to the results of the August 2 Republican primary elections in the NDRC’s target states

“The results of yesterday’s primaries cement the Republican Party’s embrace of extreme election deniers. In Michigan, the Republican gubernatorial and secretary of state candidates have strong records of perpetuating the Big Lie. These are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a GOP field that is filled with election deniers and conspiracy theorists – including insurrectionists – running for elected positions that are critical to conducting free and fair elections and safeguarding our democracy. By embracing extreme nominees who deny the 2020 election results and worse, Republicans have put democracy on the ballot.

“In the face of this danger, our nation cannot afford complacency this fall. We can and we must fight to protect the very safeguards of our electoral system and the democratic values of our country. This is exactly why Attorney General Eric Holder has led the expansion of our electoral program to include state and local offices critical to safeguarding our democracy in addition to those that are involved directly in redistricting. Through our work, we will ensure voters understand what is at stake in this year’s election and which candidates to support in order to protect our democracy.”
