Eric Holder Statement on Proposed Pennsylvania Map
Washington, D.C. — Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., Chairman of NDRC and the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, released the following statement on the map Republicans in the Pennsylvania legislature released last night:
“The map that Republicans put forward last night does practically nothing to fix the partisan gerrymandering that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court found violated the state’s constitution. Over the past couple of weeks, citizens across Pennsylvania have spoken out for fair congressional maps and they deserve better than an unfair status quo. Instead of politicians picking their voters, Pennsylvanians should be able to choose their elected officials.”
Earlier this week, NDRC announced Pennsylvania is on its Electoral Target list for 2018. The targets include the states that were the most badly gerrymandered by Republicans in 2011 as well as states where Democrats have an opportunity to protect against Republican gerrymandering.
The NDRC is the first-ever strategic hub for a comprehensive redistricting strategy that includes winning targeted elections, reforming the system, advancing legal action and building the infrastructure needed to achieve a fairer redistricting process.
Our goal is to restore fairness to our democracy by undoing the Republican gerrymandering plaguing our country and creating fair congressional and legislative maps that reflect the will of the voters.
If we’re going to secure fair maps for the next decade, Democrats need to win critical battles before 2021 redistricting.
We’re on the right path. In the past few years the NDRC has helped fair map Democrats make big gains -- winning nine governors races, flipping eight state legislative chambers, and winning three state Supreme Court races.
But to keep winning in 2020 and ensure fair maps for a decade to come, we need to double down on our efforts now. Will you pitch in to help us fund our multi-pronged strategy to end Republican gerrymandering and demand fair elections?
That’s why the NDRC is fighting back to even the playing field and make sure every voter is heard. Join us today:
