National Democratic Redistricting PAC Invests in Texas State Legislative Race

Washington, D.C. — Today, the National Democratic Redistricting PAC, an affiliate of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), is announcing a $25,000 investment in the Texas House Democratic Campaign Committee in support of its efforts to elect Dr. Eliz Markowitz in the Texas House District 28 special election. Today’s announcement brings the total investment in Markowitz’s campaign to $50,000. The special election will take place on Tuesday, January 28.

Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chair of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, released the following statement:

“The fight against manipulated maps will determine the direction of America’s politics for at least the next decade, and I’m proud to support candidates and elected officials who are committed to a fair redistricting process in 2021.

“With the 2020 election season in full swing, Texas is a priority for our organization. As one of the most gerrymandered states in the country, the legislature contains too many politicians who shamelessly push some of America’s most ill-conceived laws that attack voting rights, reproductive rights and otherwise stand in sharp contrast to the desires of the people. If elected, Eliz will be a key voice in fixing our broken political system and returning power to the people, where it belongs.”

In addition to these investments, Holder has made four trips to Texas in 2019 for public events and fundraisers for down-ballot candidates.

Texas is an NDRC Electoral Target State in 2020. Democrats are just nine seats from flipping the Texas House in 2020, which would ensure that Republicans do not have total control of the redistricting process again in 2021. The National Democratic Redistricting PAC helped Democrats flip two seats in the state Senate and 12 seats in the state House in 2018.

Target states include those that were the most badly gerrymandered by Republicans in 2011, as well as states where Democrats have an opportunity to protect against Republican gerrymandering.

The NDRC is the first-ever strategic hub for a comprehensive redistricting strategy that includes winning targeted elections, reforming the system, advancing legal action and building the infrastructure needed to achieve a fair redistricting process. Our goal is to restore fairness to our democracy and ensure every American has an equal say in our government.
