NDRC Announces 2018 Electoral Targets

Washington, D.C. — Today, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) announced its electoral targets for the 2018 election cycle. This is a critical election year for redistricting because it is the first cycle where the officials elected will serve during the redistricting process in 2021.

As the only entity looking at the electoral map strictly through the lens of redistricting, NDRC’s targets shine a spotlight on the elections most important for shifting the balance of power in the redistricting process.

NDRC is targeting 12 states, including 9 gubernatorial races, 20 legislative chambers, 2 ballot initiatives, and 2 down-ballot races.  There are 8 additional states on our Watch List.

“Gerrymandering contributes to the political polarization and dysfunction in this country and is a threat to our democracy. In 2011, Republicans created gerrymandered districts that locked themselves into power and shut out voters from the electoral process,” said Eric H. Holder, Jr., Chairman of NDRC and the 82nd Attorney General of the United States. “By focusing on these state and local races, we can ensure Democrats who will fight for fairness have a seat at the table when new maps are drawn in 2021.”

NDRC will invest time and resources in these races and utilize our position as the strategic hub for redistricting to focus organizational efforts into these areas. We will also put a particular focus on turning out young people and people of color in these states this year.

Our goal is to restore fairness to our democracy by undoing the Republican gerrymandering plaguing our country and creating fair congressional and legislative maps that reflect the will of the voters.
