NDRC Announces 2nd Round of 2022 Democracy Defenders
September 8, 2022
Washington, D.C. – Today, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) announced another round of statewide Democracy Defenders, the second in a series within our 2022 Democracy Targets. The full list is available here.
The NDRC’s newly-expanded electoral program is shining a spotlight on races that are essential to safeguarding our democracy in addition to those involved in redistricting. Following the launch of the expanded electoral program, polls have shown that voters are increasingly concerned about threats to democracy. According to a FiveThirtyEight analysis, more than one in two Americans will have an election denier on the ballot this fall.
“In primary after primary, Republican candidates who pledge to dismantle the pillars of our democracy are winning nominations for offices that are critical to free and fair elections. As a result, voters are rightfully concerned about threats to our democracy,” said Eric Holder, the 82nd Attorney General of the United States and Chair of the NDRC. “In the face of these threats, the candidates we are supporting are literal Democracy Defenders. These gubernatorial, secretary of state, and state legislative candidates will not just protect our democracy, they will also play a key role to strengthen it. The contrast between Republican nominees and our Democracy Defenders could not be more clear and the stakes for our country could not be higher this election. Our democracy is on the ballot this fall and it is incumbent upon everyone to vote – and to help others vote – in order to protect it.”
