NDRC Issues Statement Ahead of Oral Arguments in Hoffmann v. New York State Independent Redistricting Commission

November 15, 2023

Washington, DC – Today, ahead of oral arguments before the New York State Court of Appeals in Hoffmann v. New York State Independent Redistricting Commission, John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), issued the following statement in support of the petitioners, who are asking the court to give the New York State Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) another chance to redraw the state’s congressional map:

“New York’s highest court should return the redistricting process to the state’s independent commission, the body which Empire State voters have empowered with the responsibility of, and duty to, draw fair electoral maps. While no process is infallible, independent commissions have consistently produced fairer maps than those drawn by politicians. If given the opportunity, the New York State Independent Redistricting Commission can and should conduct an open, transparent process and draw a congressional map that is more competitive and more accurately reflects the will of New Yorkers than the current court-enacted map.”
