Today, after a federal court ruled Republican-drawn electoral maps in Alabama unconstitutional, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) issued the following statement:

“This ruling marks a significant victory for fairer districts in Alabama and across the country,” said Marc Elias, Counsel for the NDRC. “As Donald Trump was being sworn in, a Federal Court in Alabama struck down 12 state legislative districts for violating the U.S. Constitution.

“Alabama will now need to redraw its map, a process that should yield better and fairer results for African-American voters and Democrats,” Elias added. “This should serve as notice to GOP legislators and governors everywhere that the days of gerrymandering districts in violation of the Voting Rights Act and the U.S. Constitution are numbered.”
