Statement from Eric Holder on President Trump’s Interference in the Democratic Process
Washington, D.C. – Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, released the following statement regarding President Trump’s ongoing efforts to subvert the results of the presidential election:
“This is a period of maximum danger for our democracy. Tampering with county officials and inviting state legislators to the White House to discuss a plot to reverse the results of a free and fair election is the behavior of a foreign autocrat, not an American president.
“If there are any elected Republicans who care more about the oath they took to defend the Constitution than catering to the whims of the outgoing president, now is the time for them to speak on behalf of American values. The American people overwhelmingly supported President-elect Biden in this election and there is no basis or legal authority for any state legislatures or public officials to refuse to certify the results.
“Even though the outgoing president’s haphazard and pathetic efforts to overturn the will of the people are bound to fail, he and the Republicans actually enabling his behavior, and those whose silence makes them complicit in it, are doing long-term damage to our representative democracy.”
