Eric Holder on Tennessee Republicans Passing Gerrymandered Congressional and Legislative Maps

January 24, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, Eric H. Holder, Jr., 82nd Attorney General of the United States and chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, released the following statement after Tennessee Republicans passed gerrymandered congressional and legislative maps:

“The maps passed by Tennessee Republicans are blatant partisan gerrymanders. The congressional map splits Nashville into three separate districts, weakening the voting power of the region’s economic powerhouse and the city’s black community. This map is an obvious attempt to deliver illegitimate political power to the Republican Party for the next decade.

“It is essential that Davidson County remains whole. Carving up Nashville would make it near impossible for the voters to fairly elect representatives of their choosing.

“Neither the Congressional nor state legislative maps are representative of the people of the diversifying state of Tennessee, and they completely disregard the law. Tennesseans deserve maps that create fair districts that accurately reflect the state, and keep communities of interest together.”
