NDRC: Georgia Republicans’ State Senate Map is Yet Another Gerrymander
November 28, 2023
Washington, D.C. – This week, Georgia Republicans have put forward a State Senate map that fails to appropriately remedy the state’s prior violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), as it continues to dilute the voting power of Black Georgians.
This fall, the federal district court ruled in the cases Pendergrass v. Raffensberger and Grant v. Raffensberger that Georgia’s congressional and state legislative maps violate the VRA. The National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), the 501(c)(3) affiliate of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), initiated these legal challenges in 2021.
“This map is yet another undemocratic gerrymander from Republicans that fails to meet any basic standard of fairness, and should be rejected off the bat,” said John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC). “Our message is clear: do not let this opportunity to shatter decades of gerrymandering that has denied Black Georgia voters fair representation pass by. The people of Georgia deserve maps that do not dilute their votes.”
