Statement from Eric Holder on the Need to Remove Trump from Office

Washington, D.C. — Eric H. Holder, Jr., the 82nd Attorney General of the United States, released the following statement on need to remove President Trump from office:

“What transpired at the Capitol yesterday made it clear that the nation will be at risk if Donald Trump remains president for the next two weeks. He is unbalanced, vengeful, and unfit. He simply cannot be trusted with the powers of the presidency. It is time for leaders in our government to prioritize the national welfare and – either through the 25th Amendment or impeachment – remove him from office. Now.

“Administration officials who have finally decided they can no longer serve this president must do more. Cabinet officials should not resign, but rather use the constitutional power they hold to remove this president and then, with the Vice President, help ensure a safe and orderly transfer of power. Others still in the government, particularly officials at the Pentagon and Department of Justice, must not follow orders from this lawless president that contravene the law, the Constitution or our dearly held democratic values.

“What transpired yesterday was not an isolated incident, but rather the culmination of a sustained assault on our system of government led by the current occupant of the White House and all those who have enabled him. The thugs who stormed the Capitol did not act alone – complicit are elected officials, lawyers, and all those who have tried to overturn a free and obviously fair election. The individuals who took part in this insurrection are a dangerous mob. There must be accountability — consequences — for their actions or the danger to the nation that they pose will remain.”
